According to the National Institutes of Health, a third of all people suffer from insomnia. The reasons can vary; from stress, to chronic pain, to underlying emotional or mental health reasons.

But the reasons all leads to the same thing: sleepless nights. Lying in bed, staring at the ceiling. Insomnia affects millions of people, and trying to solve all the problems that lead to it can be next to impossible.

And that’s why so many people have turned to CBD for help sleeping. CBD oils can help us sleep in a number of ways. Sometimes it’s a simple matter of keeping chronic pain at bay so we can relax. Spruce CBD: Best Overall

When you do some research into CBD oil products, you may find that a number of them use the same farms in Colorado. There are a number of good reasons for this, and there’s nothing wrong with that, at all. But Spruce has a unique strand of hemp that is over two hundred years old, and it’s part of what makes them our Best Overall CBD oil for sleep.

Using a unique hemp means that Spruce’s CBD has a completely different chemical profile than other CBD products. Before the plant is even harvested and processed, Spruce’s product is different. One key difference is the terpenes in their hemp. Terpenes are the chemical in plants responsible for the aroma of the vegetation. In the case of hemp, these aromas are also part of the package that makes full-spectrum CBD so effective.

By using a full-spectrum CBD, and one with a unique chemical profile, Spruce ensures that you’re getting a more powerful and totally different product than any other on the market. Their CBD tincture goes all the way up to 2400 mg per bottle. And its full-spectrum, which means you’re getting the full effect of the ‘entourage’ of cannabinoids.

Spruce also makes our list as Best Overall because they’ve included a product in their lineup specifically for sleep. They call it their Spruce Rest, and it’s a modification of their existing full-spectrum CBD oil. What makes the Spruce Rest different is the addition of extra CBN oil.

CBN, or cannabinol, is different than CBD, cannabidiol. While there are many benefits to CBD, and both are naturally occurring in hemp products, CBN has been researched extensively as a sleep aid and sedative.

Spruce doesn’t take anything out of their full-spectrum oil to make it a better sleep aid, they only increase the amount of CBN. In fact, there’s over 30 times the amount of CBN in their Spruce Rest than in their other oils.

PROS

  • Company with unique hemp strain.
  • Full-Spectrum CBD benefits.
  • Some of the strongest concentrations of CBD found.
  • Unique, high-CBN Spruce Rest formula for sleep.

CONS

  • Full-spectrum means trace amounts of THC.
  • A little expensive.

For the Best Overall CBD product for sleeping and insomnia, we recommend Spruce, specifically their Spruce Rest formula. They have a unique blend and offer full-spectrum benefits. Right now, their Spruce Rest is available on their website for $139. If you sign up for a subscription it’s $88.96.

CBDfx: Best Formula

Every product we looked at has its pros and cons. But to be Best Formula for Sleep, we needed something that none of the others had. We found that CBDfx’s Sleep Tincture was one of the only products specifically made for sleep, and that included known sleep aids.

Like Spruce’s Rest formula, the Sleep Tincture from CBDfx has added CBN for better sleep regulation. But they also have terpenes that they’ve identified just for helping get to sleep and find better rest once you get there.

What really sets the CBDfx formula apart from the others, though, is that they have included Melatonin in their Sleep Tincture. The same proven, over-the-counter sleep medicine that people have been taking for years is now included in a CBD and CBN product for better and easier sleep.

Sleep Tincture is also broad-spectrum, meaning it has all the great cannabinoids, flavonoids, and terpenes of full-spectrum hemp, without the THC. In fact, CBDfx markets its Sleep Tincture as having undetectable levels of THC. Because it’s broad-spectrum, you’re getting all the benefits of hemp and CBD, without the psychoactive effects of THC.

CBDfx is so committed to a formula with scientific backing and verifiable results, they’ve added to their website the testimony of a Pharmacological Doctor who has used the product himself. In Dr. John Rackhma’s words, he felt the effects in less than an hour.

The formula of Sleep Tincture is so powerful, their website has a disclaimer for not operating machinery or driving a car after taking their product. They also offer a 60-day money-back guarantee.

PROS

  • Formula includes melatonin
  • Added CBN
  • Broad-Spectrum
  • Doctor reviewed

CONS

  • Causes extreme drowsiness
  • Not safe to drive or operate machinery after taking

For the Best Formula in a CBD Sleep aid, we recommend the Sleep Tincture from CBDfx. It has melatonin, added CBN, and it’s broad-spectrum. We didn’t see that

Royal CBD: Most Environmentally Friendly

For anyone that’s become environmentally conscious, it can be a nightmare finding products that work and are good for the earth. Thanks to some close reading, though, we found a high-grade CBD oil that’s also good for the environment. Royal CBD sources all of its hemps from organic farms and doesn’t use any harsh chemicals in extracting the oil.

To speak a little about the extraction method Royal uses, we do need to get a little technical for a moment. Instead of using harsh chemicals like butane or propane, Royal forces regular CO2 into a ‘supercritical’ state that forces the oils out of the hemp plant. According to one website, it is “hands down the safest and cleanest” way to get CBD out of the plant.

And to prove their worth and effort, Royal CBD sends all its products to a third-party lab to test them for everything from heavy metals to herbicides and pesticides. Not only do those labs find nothing, they also make sure there are no molds or other bacteria in Royal CBD.

That means not only are you getting a product that’s proven safe for the environment, but you’re also getting one that’s been tested to be safe for you. Royal CBD has built its brand around being a cut above their competition, and they’re committed to delivering a product that matches their name.

Royal CBD also has a convenient delivery method for their oil that we don’t see in a lot of other products: gel capsules. If you’re only looking for regular sleep aid, and don’t want a lot of fuss around your regimen, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better method than Royal CBD’s controlled dose in their gel caps. These capsules can make getting off to bed a lot more manageable. If you’re fumbling with an oil dropper or chewing on gummies right before bed, it may interfere with getting through the rest of your nighttime routine. The gel capsules can solve that.

PROS

  • Organically grown hemp
  • Clean extraction method
  • Third-party lab tested
  • Convenient capsules

CONS

  • Works for pain and sleep, but no testimonials for sleep
  • A tad pricey

For an environmentally-friendly CBD oil from a company that’s willing to test its own product, we recommend Royal CBD. Its lowest grade oil is available for $74, or the capsules are available for $84, both on their website.

CBDPure: Most Natural

While nearly every product we researched came with a measure of being natural, some products stuck out as especially from-the-earth. For the absolute most natural, we had to give it to CBDPure

CBDPure comes from farms that only grow their hemp in a certified-organic way. That means no herbicides and no pesticides. They also use only hemp grown locally to their Vancouver, WA offices. The furthest they go for hemp is Colorado, but a portion of their hemp comes right from Washington state.

The oils from CBDPure are full-spectrum, and that’s not only because they believe in the compounds of full-spectrum hemp. It’s also because removing the THC from hemp still involves a chemical reaction. And it produces waste. By keeping their product full-spectrum, CBDPure is making sure there is no waste left behind, no waste created via the process of THC extraction, and they’re making sure you get the full benefit of your CBD product.

Another aspect of their dedication to being as all-natural as possible, CBDPure doesn’t even flavor their oil. While some makers of CBD oil use natural flavors, CBDPure goes a step further and keeps the flavors out, altogether.

PROS

  • Organically-grown hemp
  • Full-spectrum
  • No additives
  • Multiple strengths available

CONS

  • The natural flavor may not be for everyone
  • Limited product line

For the absolute most natural of all the CBD sleep aids, we recommend CBDPure. Their tincture is available in different potencies. Their 300mg oil is available in a one-month supply for $29.99.

Joy Organics: Best Broad-Spectrum CBD

Many studies have shown the most effective forms of CBD oil are those that include the other chemicals from the hemp plant. These are called flavonoids, cannabinoids, and terpenes. When a product includes all of these compounds, but still minus the THC, that’s called a ‘broad-spectrum’ oil. The Best in that category goes to Joy Organics.

We are all pretty aware of cannabinoids, by now. They are commonly known as the beneficial parts of plants in the cannabis family. Our body actually has a whole network of sensors that help us with cannabinoids, called the endocannabinoid system. Most studies have shown that the more of these natural compounds a CBD product contains, the better the CBD will be received by your body.

These broad-spectrum CBD products are sometimes better for people who are trying to avoid full-spectrum products because those contain trace amounts of THC. If that’s the case for you, you’ll like Joy Organics.

As their name implies, Joy Organics sources its hemp from Organic farms, and part of what makes them the Best Broad-Spectrum is that they offer a line of USDA Certified Organic tinctures.

But that’s not all that makes them Best. They also offer third-party lab results that show their products are completely THC-free. That’s right. 0% detectable amounts of THC in their product, but all of the other chemicals beneficial to a CBD user.

One word of warning: even though Joy Organics has lab-tested their products to contain no THC, some lower-grade drug tests are not as sophisticated as the labs that Joy Organics uses. This means that if you’re taking a drug screening, you should be aware that the markers in the CBD oil may trigger the testing materials, even though there is no actual THC in the product.

PROS

  • USDA Organic options available.
  • Organic hemp
  • Broad-spectrum, no THC
  • Still contains all the other cannabinoids beneficial to people

CONS

  • Not all products are good for sleep (they have an energy drink and creams)
  • Not all products are certified organic

Anyone looking for organic hemp products that are also certified broad-spectrum needs to look no further than Joy Organics. Their products are third-party tested to contain every bit of the CBD you want with 0% detectable THC. Their organic line of oils starts at $44.95 on their website in a variety of flavors.

Charlotte’s Web: Best Reputation

There are many ways to measure a reputation. In the business world, it can be especially difficult. A company could have one reputation among the labor force, and a completely different reputation among its business partners. And both could be dramatically different from the reputation the company has with its customers. For checking all those boxes, and more, we found the CBD company with the best reputation was Charlotte’s Web.

One of the main reasons we found it easy to give this recommendation is that Charlotte’s Web is a Certified B Corporation. If you’re not familiar with the certification process, you can check their website, here.

Being B Certified isn’t just a one-time achievement. It also binds the company that receives the certification to continuously earn its status. In fact, according to the website, these companies are legally required to keep working on their impact on their customers, their suppliers, and the environment.

Lots of companies talk about their commitments to people and the world around them. Few companies are willing to become legally required to keep making those commitments. With that sort of dedication, we had to give Charlotte’s Web the Best Reputation recommendation.

Another sign of a good reputation is recognition from within the industry. And Charlotte’s Web is US Hemp Authority Certified. This is a self-governed board that seeks to keep the standards of the Hemp Industry at the highest possible level. Their website is available here.

But that reputation also requires a good product, and Charlotte’s Web doesn’t disappoint. They have a full range of products and a product finder applet that can help you find the formula and type of CBD product that’s best for you.

PROS

  • Certified B Corporation
  • US Hemp Authority Certified
  • Full-Spectrum CBD
  • No additives or dyes
  • Free shipping worldwide

CONS

  • Products are a little expensive
  • Product finder makes looking at full-range a little difficult

Finding a company, or person, with a good reputation can be tricky. It helps a lot when there are third-party associations that can help us vet the companies we’re looking at. Thanks to their certifications, we can recommend Charlotte’s Web as the Best Reputation among CBD products for sleeping. Their flagship CBD oil is available on their website for $119.99.

What the Science Says About CBD for Sleep

There are a lot of claims around the internet, so we made sure to look for some trusted sources. One such is used for medical research and database purposes, called the National Institutes of Health. We found an article from them supportive of preliminary findings that CBD oil is helpful in combating insomnia and other sleep disorders.

Some of the sleep problems they found support for were insomnia, of course, but also REM sleep problems, and excessive daytime sleeping. Another report, this one from Harvard, supports the findings that many people are reporting more and better sleep thanks to CBD.

Findings around how and why CBD oils help with sleep generally rely on observation, at this point. That is to say, there hasn’t been enough study into the chemistry going on in the brain when CBD attaches to endocannabinoid receptors, and how that chemistry promotes sleep. But the effects for many people have been real, and they are discovering better sleep with CBD oil.

Two Probable Causes

There is an aspect of CBD application that has been studied quite extensively, and that’s how it helps people with chronic pain. Another study from the NIH found extensive reason to believe that CBD has great applications in the easing of chronic pain. And for millions of people, that could mean better sleep.

Not only does chronic pain keep people awake, it can also wake people up. That means less sleep throughout the night, and less restful sleep once you do get some shut eye.

The previous report we mentioned from Harvard also mentions that CBD’s helping with anxiety may also be a cause in how it helps people get better sleep. After all, if you’re worried, you won’t get to sleep. But with CBD, numerous sources are saying that you might get better slumber, whether it’s from decreasing pain or easing anxiety.

Conclusion

The modern world has a number of products that make promises about sleep and well-being. But the CBD craze is for real. Millions of people all over the world have been turning to this all-natural compound for everything from stress to pain to better sleep.

We recommend all six of these projects and found a Best in several categories to fit any need you might have. We found that CBD products for sleep are not habit-forming like opioids and narcotics, and are safe for healthy adults.

Frequent Asked Questions

 Is CBD Legal?

It is. The United States and FDA have allowed for hemp production and consumption in pure form.

Will I Fail a Drug Test?

You may indeed. Even CBD products that are THC-free still contain the same cannabinoids as marijuana. Lesser-grade drug screening apparatus will trigger those protein markers. It’s always best to be up front with whoever is conducting your screening about what supplements you’re taking.

 Is CBD Safe?

Yes, though the word of the day is “slow and low.” That is to say, start off with as low a dose as you can find, and step it up gradually.

Will It Really Help Me Sleep?

Every product is going to interact with every person differently. While some people see results, you may not. Try to look on our list for a product with a money-back guarantee if you’re not sure.

How Soon Will I Fall Asleep?

Some products we researched had indications that you could see or feel results in as little as half an hour. However, nearly every manufacturer-recommended you keep with low doses for a few weeks until you’re sure you need to increase the potency or amount.
